SHURA Started Out for Turkey's Energy Transition

28 Mart 2019 Dergi: Mart-Nisan 2019

SHURA Energy Transition Center, established in cooperation with European Climate Foundation (ECF), Agora Energiewende, the most active think tank of Germany about energy, and Sabanci University's Istanbul Policy Center (IPC), started out in order to support Turkey's transition to a low-carbon energy system by performing data-based, objective and independent analysis. SHURA, focusing on forming a common basis for the discussions on Turkey's energy industry with the researches and analysis evaluating the energy industry in Turkey in terms of economical, technological and policies aspects, aims to form an insight putting the energy efficiency and renewable resources in the center. Selahattin Hakman, Head of SHURA Energy Transformation Center Steering Committee, said: “SHURA believes in the importance of a process that takes into account the perspectives of all stakeholders of the energy industry in order to realize the energy transition in a fast and economic way and to benefit all parties.” Mentioning the opportunities that the energy transition will create for the country's economy, Dr. Değer SAYGIN, Director of SHURA Energy Transition Center, said: "Turkey has become one of Europe's fastest-growing wind and solar markets during the recent years. Our country has many features that can play a pioneering role on a global scale with its industry offering solutions for energy transition, investors that remain open to flexible and new business models and creative entrepreneurs. The results of the studies analyzing the increasing share of renewable resources in the electricity transmission system are exciting. Turkey is able to double the estimated increase on wind and solar energy without requiring an additional cost to network investment which TEİAŞ has planned until 2026. Thus, the electricity generated from these sources will be able to meet more than 20 percent of the total consumption.” In his speech, Dr. Patrick Graichen, Executive Director of Agora Energiewende, the most active think tank of Germany about energy, said: "I believe that SHURA is a valuable business partner for Turkey's energy future." Evaluating the energy transition in the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Laurence Tubiana, founding partner of SHURA and General Manager of European Climate Foundation, said: “The transition of the energy across the countries is a prerequisite for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. I believe SHURA, when taking in consideration the analytical basis, experienced team about energy system, transparent and data-specific attitude, will inspire transition policies of Turkey for safe, efficient and low-carbon energy system.
